Dear Benefactors and Friends,
In 2011, the Alexandre de Rhodes Center Alumni Association created the charity AFAR Foundation ( AFF) with the goals of supporting financially poor students, improving the standard of living of underprivileged children and alleviating patients suffering in the home country.
A. Organization:
AFF is a non-profit charitable organization. Its guiding principles are: “Practicality, Transparency and Efficacy”. The foundation is managed by the Board of Directors and the Executive Committee, whose members are elected by the Alumni. No AFF members receive any form of compensations for their participation in these charitable activities.
B. Board of Directors and Executive Committee:
Meet at least every quarter to review current activities and formulate future plans. AFAR Alumni in Vietnam are hands on and manage these programs on verified needs. All donations from benefactors like you go directly to the aids recipients, without any intermediary, private or governmental.
C. Programs:
Overall, our charitable programs in VN are progressing successfully. AFF has helped a good number of people, mainly the children at the two shelters and the night class. The students receiving scholarships are presented below. We encourage you to visit our website: http://afaronline.org/ to have a more thorough understanding about our organization and our programs.
1.- Mai Lien Shelter: located in district 8 Saigon, run by Catholic nuns. This shelter fosters about 18 orphans, homeless or under-privileged children, from 4th grade to 12th AFF is granting 4 scholarships for every academic year. AFF has equipped the shelter with a modern water filtration system and has remodeled the common sleeping quarters into age-based smaller units. Since September 2015, AFF also has contributed to the shelter foods budget. Occasionally, AFF members organized for the children an entertainment party or gifts donation sessions.
2.- Hoa Hong Nho Shelter, located in the city of My Tho, run by Catholic nuns. The shelter has about 17-18 children who stays at the shelter but attend local schools. Since 2015, AFF has provided scholarships for 4 children. AFF also has remodeled the children sleeping quarters and upgraded the shelter’s sanitary facilities. We also contribute to their foods budget.
3.- Esto Vir scholarships in CanTho:
Since its creation in 2011, AFF has granted scholarships to 16 college students throughout college (from 3 years for college to 6 years for professional schools such as Medicine /Pharmacy schools…) 10 students have graduated, comprising of 3 pharmacists, 2 doctors, 3 Agriculture Bachelors, 1 Bachelor of Foods Industries, 1 Bachelor of Cultivation. In 2017, AFF has started 3 new scholarships to replace graduating students. Currently there are a total of 6 students receiving scholarships. A few AFAR alumni are also granting personal scholarships in parallel with AFF, such as NTV in Belgium (9 scholarships), VVH in France (3) and NDT in the US (1). All the recipients after graduation have secured a good job, as the first step toward a stable life and a bright future.

Hello dear Uncle Son and all my dear AFAR Uncles,
I’m writing this letter on the eve of my graduation from med school- in only 12 hours. From my first day in med school, I had the luck of meeting all the Uncles in the Esto Vir program. It has been a long journey for me as well as for all of you. You are all a great source for my motivation, not only on the material but also on the moral standpoint- not everyone has the privilege to hear your precious advices. This is really my great good fortune. In the last 6 years, you have traveled regularly from Saigon to Can Tho so that you can spend some time talking to us, to stay updated of our progress and our potential difficulties. I truly cannot find the proper words to express my gratitude. To have met you, to learn from your deep interest, thoughtfulness and thoroughness in your dealings with others, is truly my immense good fortune. I thank you very much.

4. Esto Vir scholarships Hue- Da Nang
In 2016, the Esto Vir scholarship Program extended to Hue-Da Nang area in central Vietnam. So far AFF has granted 9 scholarships for academically good , underprivileged college students. Two students in this program have graduated, including Thu Ha, Nursing BA in DaNang and Nay Khieu, General Medicine Doctor in Hue. They have been replaced by 2 new students to maintain a total of 7 scholarships recipients.
5.- Night Class
Located at 166 Phan Anh, Tan Phu district, Saigon, this free night class is run by the energetic volunteer teacher Doan Minh Hung and his all-volunteer staff. This class offers a regular curriculum to poor children who cannot afford the fees of day school. The children are also fed dinner before class time. About 100-120 children attend this class. This class is totally dependent on donations to exist. AFF since 2016 contributes financially on a regular basis to this cause.
D. Projects:
AFF will continue all current programs, granting scholarships to new students to replace graduating ones, supporting financially the 2 shelters and the night class. It will examine new projects when they present.
E. Finances:
AFF is funded by donations of Alumni and of benefactors. AFF has been granted the status of Non-Profit Organization; therefore all donations are tax deductible.
In closing, we would like to express our sincere gratitude to all our benefactors for your confidence and support, which have allowed AFF to function and develop, in our common hope of alleviating the suffering of the less fortunate, of forming a number of young people, capable professionally and forthright morally, to help guiding Vietnam toward a brighter future.

Kính thưa quý ân nhân và thân hữu,
Vào năm 2011 các cựu Sinh viên Cư xá Đắc Lộ Sài Gòn đã thành lập Quỹ Xã Hội Afar Foundation với ước vọng tạo điều kiện cho một số sinh viên, học sinh giỏi nhưng eo hẹp về kinh tế có cơ hội vươn lên, đồng thời cũng muốn nâng cao cuộc sống của các trẻ em thiếu may mắn và làm giảm bớt những khổ đau của một số bệnh nhân ở quê nhà.
A.- Phương châm – Quỹ Xã Hội Afar Foundation (AFF = Anciens du Foyer Alexandre de Rhodes Foundation) hoạt động với phương châm ‘Thiết Thực, Minh Bạch và Hữu Hiệu’. Quỹ được điều hợp bởi Hội Đồng Quản Trị và Hội Đồng Điều Hành do các cựu sinh viên cư xá bầu ra. Không một thành viên nào của AFF tại hải ngoại cũng như ở quê nhà nhận thù lao khi tham dự các công tác này.
B.- Hội Đồng Quản Trị và Hội Đồng Điều Hành – họp mỗi tam cá nguyệt để duyệt lại những công việc đã thực hiện cũng như hoạch định chương trình cho thời gian tới. Các cựu sinh viên CXĐL tại Việt Nam trực tiếp liên lạc với các đối tượng cần giúp đỡ và hoạch định các công tác theo nhu cầu thực tế, hoàn toàn không qua trung gian của bất cứ một cá nhân hay hội đoàn nào khác. Tất cả số tiền quyên tặng của quý ân nhân được đến tận tay người thụ hưởng.
C.- Hoạt Động.- Nhìn chung, các công tác thiện nguyện tại VN đang tiến hành một cách tốt đẹp và đều đặn. Quỹ đã giúp đỡ một số trường hợp đáng kể, điển hình là tại hai mái ấm, các chương trình học bổng và một lớp học tình thương dưới đây. 1.- Mái Ấm Mai Liên (MAML) – tọa lạc tại quận 8 Sài Gòn, được các nữ tu Công giáo chăm sóc. Tại MAML các trẻ em mồ côi, không gia cư, hoặc gặp khó khăn được nuôi dưỡng và tận tâm săn sóc. MAML tạo cơ hội cho các em được tiếp tục đến trường. Mái ấm thường xuyên có 18 em cư trú, từ lớp 3 đến lớp 12. Quỹ AFF cấp học bổng cho 4 em. Quỹ cũng đã tài trợ để lắp một hệ thống lọc nước uống. Quỹ đã giúp xây lại toàn bộ phòng ngủ để các em có phòng riêng cho từng nhóm tuổi thay vì tất cả phải ở chung trong một phòng. Từ tháng 9 năm 2015, Quỹ bắt đầu cấp thêm một số tiền hàng tháng để tăng khẩu phần của tất cả các em được thêm bổ dưỡng và lành mạnh. Ngoài ra thỉnh thoảng Quỹ tổ chức các buổi sinh hoạt giải trí hay phát quà cho các em.
2.- Mái Ấm Hoa Hồng Nhỏ (MAHHN) – tọa lạc tại Mỹ Tho. Đây là một mái ấm mới do các nữ tu Công giáo trông coi. MAHHN thường xuyên có 17-18 em trú ngụ. Các em sinh sống tại đó nhưng theo học tại các trường học địa phương. Từ năm 2015, Quỹ AFF cấp học bổng cho 4 em trong số này. Quỹ cũng đã phụ giúp tu bổ hệ thống nhà vệ sinh cũng như nâng cấp khu cư trú của các em, đồng thời phụ giúp phần nào cải thiện khẩu phần dinh dưỡng của tất cả các em.
3.- Học BổngThành Nhân Cần Thơ: Kể từ khi thành lập năm 2011 đến nay, Quỹ AFF đã cấp học bổng suốt học trình cho 16 sinh viên (từ 3 năm cho sinh viên theo học Cao Đẳng đến 6 năm cho s/v Đại Học & ĐHYD), trong đó 10 em (3 Dược sĩ, 2 Bác sĩ, 3 Cử Nhân nông nghiệp 1 Cử nhân Công nghệ Thực phẩm, 1 Cao đẳng Nuôi Trồng vào các mùa hè năm 2015-‘16 -‘17) đã tốt nghiệp. Năm 2017, AFF đã cấp 3 học bổng mới thay thế học bổng của các sinh viên đã ra trường. Như vậy, hiện tại 6 em đang nhận HBTN-CT. Cùng tham gia chương trình này nhưng giúp riêng (ngoài AFF) còn có các cựu sinh viên CXĐL khác như NTV ở Bỉ (giúp 9 SV), VVH ở Pháp (giúp 3 SV) và NĐT ở Mỹ (giúp 1 SV). Tất cả các em sau khi tốt nghiệp đều có việc làm tốt, mở đầu cho một cuộc sống ổn định và một tương lai tươi sáng.

Con chào Bác Sơn và các Bác AFAR kính mến,
Con viết thư này vào buổi tối trước ngày con tốt nghiệp Đại học y khoa – chỉ còn 12h nữa thôi ạ. Ngay khi bước vào giảng đường Đại học, con may mắn gặp được các bác trong Hội học bổng thành nhân. Một chặng đường dài không chỉ đối với con mà với cả các Bác. Các bác, là nguồn động viên to lớn cho con không chỉ về vật chất mà cả tinh thần-những lời khuyên quí báu, không phải ai cũng có thể dễ dàng được nghe các Bác dạy dỗ. Đó thật sự là sự may mắn quá lớn đối với con. Những lần di chuyển Sài gòn-Cần Thơ-Sài Gòn trong 6 năm qua của các Bác chỉ để mỗi lần cả Hội chúng con và các Bác được gặp nhau, được trò chuyện, xem chúng con trưởng thành như thế nào, có gặp khó khăn gì trong cuộc sống. Sự biết ơn này quả thật không từ nào có thể diễn đạt hết. Gặp được Bác là sự may mắn quá lớn đối với con – thật sự. Sự sâu sắc, quan tâm, chu đáo trong mọi việc dành cho người khác. Con cảm ơn Bác nhiều lắm.

4.- Học Bổng Thành Nhân Huế-Đà Nẵng – Năm 2016, chương trình Học Bổng Thành Nhân mở rộng ra vùng Huế-Đà Nẵng. Từ đó đến nay, HBTN-HĐN đã cấp 9 học bổng cho các sinh viên nghèo và ưu tú. Mùa Hè 2017. Hai em trong số sinh viên này đã tốt nghiệp gồm Thu Hà, cử nhân Điều Dưỡng tại Đại Học Duy Tân Đà Nẵng và Nay Khiêu, bác sĩ đa khoa tại Đại Học Y Dược Huế.
Quỹ AFF đã cấp học bổng cho 2 sinh viên mới thay thế hai sinh viên vừa tốt nghiệp. Như vậy, hiện tại, 7 em đang nhận học bổng.
5.- Lớp Học Tình Thương Hòa Hảo tọa lạc tại số 166 Phan Anh phường Tân Thới Hòa quận Tân Phú Sài Gòn do nhà giáo trẻ và nhiệt huyết Đoàn Minh Hùng đảm trách. LHTT giúp các trẻ em nghèo không có phương tiện tới trường trong giờ học bình thường. Sĩ số học sinh của LHTT thường xuyên từ 100 đến 120. Từ năm 2016, Quỹ AFF đã bắt đầu trợ giúp một phần chị phí sinh hoạt cho lớp học này.
D.- Dự kiến: Quỹ từ thiện AFF sẽ tiếp tục những công việc đã và đang làm. Quỹ sẽ cấp học bổng mới cho sinh viên các trường đại học Cần Thơ và Huế-Đà nẵng thay thế cho các sinh viên đã tốt nghiệp, đồng thời cũng tiếp tục cấp học bổng và tăng khẩu phần dinh dưỡng cho các em nhỏ tại Mái Ấm Mai Liên, Mái Ắm Hoa Hồng Nhỏ và Lớp Học Tình Thương Hòa Hảo.
E.- Tài Chánh – Quỹ AFF nhận được sự giúp đỡ của quý vị mạnh thường quân cũng như của các cựu sinh viên CXĐL. Quỹ đã được cả liên bang lẫn tiểu bang chấp thuận quy chế tổ chức từ thiện phi lợi nhuận. Mọi đóng góp của quý vị cho Quỹ Afar Foundation đều được miễn trừ thuế.
Nhân dịp này, chúng tôi chân thành cám ơn tất cả qúy vị đã tin tưởng và hỗ trợ cho Quỹ xã hội AFF phát triển đều đặn, làm vơi đi phần nào nỗi thiệt thòi của những người thiếu may mắn, đồng thời góp phần vào việc đào tạo một số nhỏ chuyên viên tài năng và đạo đức, giúp cho quê hương Việt Nam của chúng ta tươi đẹp hơn.
Những khuôn mặt rạng rỡ, những nụ cười trên môi của các em học sinh, sinh viên tại quê nhà khi được nhìn thấy một tương lai tươi sáng là niềm vui chung của mọi người chúng ta. Dear Benefactors and Friends,
The charity AFAR Foundation was established by the alumni of the Foyer Alexandre de Rhodes in 2011 with the hope to alleviate suffering in patients, ameliorate the standard of living for the less fortunate children and to offer more opportunities for needy students in our home country. Following is the report on the AFF foundation organization, its achievements and future plan.
A–Organization:
The Board of Directors and the Executive Board members are the alumni students of the Foyer, elected by their peers every other year. Its guiding operating principles are: “Practicality, Transparency and Efficacy”
The Boards meet every quarter to review current activities and to plan future programs. AFAR members in Vietnam actively participate in these activities. They analyze the actual needs in VN, then select aid recipients and plan and execute all AFF charitable activities. They work directly with the aid subjects without going through intermediaries, to ensure that the totality of donations reach their recipients. AFAR members in the US and the rest of the world contribute with fund raising and activities planning.
No participating AFF members receive any form of compensation from AFF fund.
B- Activities:
We are delighted to inform you that your generous contributions have made a considerable impact in the lives of many people; overall all AFF charitable activities in VN are stable and progressing well.
1. Mai Lien shelter: This shelter, located in the 8th district Saigon, is run by Catholic nuns. It harbors orphans and disadvantaged children and offers them the opportunity to continue schooling. Its currently has 18 children, from 3rd to 12th grade. In 2013 the Foundation paid for the remodeling of the single bedroom into smaller rooms to allow some relative privacy for children of different age groups. It also equipped the shelter with a new water purification system.
4 children are awarded a scholarship for the whole school year, on a regular basis every year.
Starting September 2015, a monthly allocation to the children foods budget is granted to improve their nutrition.
Occasionally, the AFAF members organized parties or gifts giving parties for the children.
2- Hoa Hong Nho shelter: This is a newly established shelter in the town of My Tho by Catholic nuns. It houses about 17-18 children who attend local schools. The AFF Foundation provides scholarship for 4 children on a regular yearly basis since 2015. The Foundation has also assisted financially in the remodeling of the dormitory, the sanitary facilities and the nutrition program at the shelter on a regular basis.
3- EstoVir scholarship CanTho: Since 2011 the Foundation has awarded 4 to 6 year- scholarships for 13 college students, 8 of whom have graduated and 5 current recipients. Other AFAR members are also active in this scholarship program on an individual basis, e.g. NTV from Belgium (with 9 scholarships), VVH from France ( with 3 scholarships ) and NDT from the US ( 1 scholarship)

4- Hue- Danang EstoVir scholarship:
Starting in 2016, the EstoVir scholarship program has been expanded to the Hue- DaNang area in central VN and has awarded scholarships to 5 students in the area.
5- Night Class LHTT: located in Tan Phu district, Saigon, this free night class is run by the all- volunteer team of Mr. Doan Minh Hung. It has about 100 children divided into several classes, crammed in a small rented room. The students come from poor families who cannot afford schooling in regular daytime hours, several students also have to earn a living in the daytime. This class gives those less fortunate children a last chance to learn to read and write or to advance their schooling. The staff also cooks for the children a free dinner before class. The Foundation supports this charity with a monthly monetary contribution toward its operating cost.

6- Future plan: AFF Foundation plans to continue all current activities. All
scholarships will be on a rotating basis, replacing graduating students with new recipients. Nutrition funding to the shelters will be maintained. The two shelters just received their official operating permit which will facilitate all transactions between AFF and the shelters.
C- Finances:
The AFF Foundation exists and functions thanks to the contributions of donors like you. The Foundation has received the status of a non-profit organization so your contributions are tax deductible.
In closing, we would like to extend our most sincere thanks to all of you who have put your trust in the Former students of the Alexandre de Rhodes Foyer AFAR and support the Foundation in its task to alleviate to a certain extend the suffering of the sick and disadvantaged, to assist to the formation of capable and virtuous experts, to help Vietnam toward a brighter future. The smile, the radiant faces of the sick as well as the children and the students when they see a ray of hope for their future, make all our common efforts worthwhile. Dear friends and benefactors,
The dream of former students from Foyer Alexander de Rhodes (FAR) can be summed up into three very distinct goals: increasing patients’ health, improving the lives of those less fortunate, and creating a world where dedicated students can have a brighter future. At the 50th Anniversary celebration of FAR in 2011, a group of former FAR students decided to form a charity organization named the AFAR FOUNDATION. On behalf of AFAR Foundation, we are happy to inform you of its achievements in the past three years and also our future plans.
A. Introduction:
AFAR Foundation is coordinated by a Board of Directors elected by FAR alumni. Some alumni are still living in Vietnam, and directly execute the Board’s decisions by contacting the people in need and submitting the plans to the Board without any interference from the local organization. This ensures that all monetary contributions and gifts from benefactors will go to the proper recipients, and that NO MEMBER OF THE BOARD RECEIVES ANY MONEY FROM THE FOUNDATION. The Board follows these three principles for any charitable endeavor they pursue: PRACTICALITY, TRANSPARENCY AND EFFICIENCY. In the United States, the Board meets every three months to review business and to make plans for future projects. Each meeting is recorded according to US regulations.
B. Activities:
1.MAI LIEN HOUSE (MAML): MAML is located in the 8th District of Saigon. It fosters twenty young girls from grades 3 to 11 who have been orphaned and left under the care of the nuns who live there. MAML offers them love, care, and the opportunity to grow up and have a better education. In 2013, AFAR Foundation helped to repair the study room and remodeled the living quarters so that each age group would have its own designated area. We have also provided a water filter system and four scholarships.

2. PHAN SINH HOUSE (MAPS): MAPS is located at Long Thanh in Dong Nai Province, about thirty miles from Saigon. This house fosters thirty-nine severely disabled young orphans, along with fourteen homeless and/or disabled elderly members. AFAR Foundation has contributed funds for physical therapy equipment, and has also organized a medical team to visit them periodically, prepare medical records for each resident, and set up an emergency medication cabinet. In 2013, AFAR Foundation paid for a top of the line water filter system, providing healthy water for everyone.

3. SCHOLARSHIPS: In the past three years, AFAR Foundation has provided a partial scholarship for eight underprivileged students at Can Tho University. In addition, one FAR alumnus has given each of them a laptop during his visits to Viet Nam.

4. FUTURE PLANS: AFAR Foundation will continue the above projects, but if financially possible, we would like to extend the scholarship program to include three students at Saigon University, and to facilitate the building of a safe wooden bridge across a river in a remote area to help children go to school safely.
C. Finance:
AFAR Foundation has received donations from FAR alumni as well as other benefactors. Through our good works, AFAR Foundation has been granted tax exempt status as a nonprofit charitable organization by both Federal and State Authorities. Therefore, all contributions have been tax deductible since January 13, 2011.
In 2012, we organized a charity event and received a substantial contribution, but in order to continue our work and reach our goals, we need your support. On behalf of all beneficiaries, we express our sincere thanks to your previous generosity. We hope that you will continue to extend your hands and open your hearts to this charity.
